PC Condom FAQ
1What is PC-Condom?
PC-Condom is a USB device that when inserted in your computer will prevents programs, Malware, SpyWare, AdWare, and even most virus from getting installed. It does this by blocking program files from being written to the hard drive.
Normal users don’t typically install programs after the computer is configured.
2Who needs PC-Condom?
PC-Condom is designed for non-technical people; people who do not, or should not, routinely install software. In other words, nearly everyone except programmers and IT professionals.
3Why did we build PC-Condom?
We are computer experts so when some ugly piece of MalWare attacks us, we can deal with it. But 99% of computer users aren’t experts and are completely unprepared for attacks with Malware like CryptoLocker.
4How much does PC-Condom cost?
PC-Condom costs $5 per PC-Condom USB Device per month. This allows you to take your PC-Condom and use it on another computer.
5Can I get a free trial with the USB?
To get a completely free trial of PC Condom you will have to download it to your own USB stick.
Then follow these instructions
Otherwise you can order the stick from us for $10.95 and we will ship the trial version pre-installed on the stick.
6How do I know PC Condom is working?
You will hear a 'snap' when PC Condom is inserted. It is then activated. You will hear a 'pop' when it PC Condom blocks an installation. It will 'snap' again when PC Condom is removed.
7Is there a reason I would want to remove PC Condom?
Yes, you would want to remove it when you need to install updates or other legitimate software. Chrome and Firefox will update automatically so you'll want to remove it periodically for that. You also might want to remove it before you take a shower. (just kidding, but you might need a shower after going to the nether regions of the web.)
8Can I install software with PC Condom inserted?
No. PC Condom is in place to protect you from malicious downloads, sometime these downloads will be installing without you realizing it is happening. To install software simply remove the PC Condom from the USB drive.
9What about if I need to install real software?
Remove the PC-Condom from the USB drive and you can install anything.
10How is this different that a virus scanner?
Virus scanners use ‘Signatures’ to detect and remove virus and malware. Zero-Day attacks happen before a signature can be generated.
11Can I get rid of my Anti-Virus?
For two major reasons, we do not recommend that you stop using Anti-virus:
1. PC-Condom will block programs from being written, therefore any virus, malware already installed will go undetected. Signature based virus scanners will find and remove them.
2. Currently most Malware are zero-day attacks and PC-Condom will block them, but non-program based virus, like macro-viruses built into Office files.
12PC-Condom appears to be blocking programs running from a USB drive.
PC-Condom is blocking reading of program files from USB drives and CD/DVD since they can be used to quickly infect Malware. This sort of attack is called a ‘Switchblade’ attack and PC-Condom is designed to stop it. Remove the PC-Condom device if you need to run a program from a USB drive or CD/DVD.
13I can’t install PC-Condom since I don’t have the Microsoft .Net Framework installed.
The Microsoft .Net Framework has been included since Windows Vista, If your version of Windows is before Vista, you can download it here: You want the x86 version.
14PC-Condom is blocking legitimate software updates
There have been instances of Malware being disguised as legitimate software updates. That said, if you need to apply software updates, just remove the PC-Condom device.
15Why is it version 3.0? Was there a PC-Condom 1.0?
PC-Condom is built upon ByStorm’s file security product FileSure 3.0.
We decided to sync the version numbers going forward just for sanity’s sake.
